The brief of this project was to create a airbnb out of the existing building the ‘Tankwa padstel’ in the karoo. The aim was to make private rooms for guest as well comfortable communal spaces that take in the full beauty of the karoo. The space also had to be inspired by the term, ‘Art de vivre’. This means the art of living in French.

The design focuses on creating a space where friends and family can experience the sense of community and the beauty and vastness of the karoo while adapting the French way of living which is to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

The design achieves this with its open floor plan in the communal areas and its incorporation of a boma fire pit and braai area while also creating a more tranquil and peaceful hub in the bedroom and focusing on bringing the beauty of the outside into the space using large open windows and stacker doors
